Dambulla Rock Temple
Dating back to the 1st Century BC, this is the most impressive cave temple in Sri Lanka, measuring 500ft high and a mile around its base. It has five caves under a vast overhanging rock, carved with a drip line to keep the interiors dry. In the first Cave is a recumbent image of the Buddha, 47ft long cut out of the Rock. There are images of deities associated with Buddhism all around. The frescoes on the ceiling date back to the 15th - 18th Centuries. In the Second Cave, the finest and the largest of all, there are 150 life-sized statues of Gods from the Buddhist religion along with numerous images of the Buddha himself.

Sigiriya
The Ancient City of Sigiriya is the most spectacular large stone and ancient rock fortress and palace ruin, located in the central Matale District of Sri Lanka and surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs, and other structures. A popular tourist destination, Sigiriya is renowned for its ancient frescos, which are reminiscent of the Ajanta Caves of India. It is one of the eight World Heritage Sites of Sri Lanka and is also declared by UNESCO as the 8th Wonder of the World.

Kandy is a city in the centre of Sri Lanka. It was the last capital of the ancient kings' era of Sri Lanka. The city lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy plateau, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is one of the most scenic cities in Sri Lanka and is home to The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the most venerable places for the Buddhist community of Sri Lanka and all around the world. It was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1988.

25 March (Kandy / Bentota )

The Orphanage was established in 1975, and over the years the number of elephants has increased to more than 65. Baby elephants have been brought in from various parts of the country and the orphanage has, as a result of a successful captive breeding program, 23 babies of their own.

The best time to visit is at feeding time from 0930-1000hrs and 1330-1400hrs and at bathing time from 1000-1030hrs and 1400-1430hrs when all the elephants are taken to the river The afternoon is at our own leisure to relax and enjoy the pleasures of the beach.

The Dutch Fort - Galle
Galle is Sri Lanka’s most historically interesting town. It is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in south and southeast Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and south Asian traditions. The Galle fort is a world heritage site and the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers. Other prominent landmarks in Galle include the natural harbour, the National Maritime Museum, St. Mary's Cathedral founded by Jesuit priests, one of the main Shiva temples on the island, and Amangalla the historic luxury hotel. It was a major port until about 100 years ago, but today still handles shipping and sailing boats in the natural harbour.

1 April (Bentota / Colombo)
After breakfast we move on to Colombo, enjoying a Colombo City Tour en route.

Colombo
The trade and commercial capital has long been the traditional gateway to the Orient. Sri Lanka’s largest city, it is located on the west coast and draws together all the cultures, religions and influences of foreign lands into a pot-pourri of sounds, smells and a kaleidoscope of colour. The original traders and settlers - the Arabs, Portuguese, Dutch and the British have left in their wake churches and monuments, names and religions, costumes and food and smatterings of their languages which have been absorbed into the speech of the Sri Lankan. Today, Colombo is a fascinating city - a happy blend of east and west, past and present, with a charm of its own. A less known but amazingly true fact is that Colombo has a superb range of high quality restaurants serving food from all over the world and some of the best shopping opportunities in Asia. The main seaport of Sri Lanka is in Colombo and adjoining it, is Pettah, a local bazaar & trading area. Other places of interest are the beautiful Buddhist temples, Hindu temples, mosques, the historic Wolfendhal Church, (1749) residential areas where you find the stately homes of the affluent, the Colombo Museum, the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall.

Overnight at Galadari Hotel(B,D).
